Hacks to survive in hostel

Living in a college hostel can be life changing. The experience is completely different than living at home.  So, below are some important to help you survive the journey
1. Folding Clothes
The limited closet space available can be partially dealt with learning how to fold clothes properly. Take five minutes to learn the simple skill of folding clothes from your parents. Or you could try the one shown below:

2. Basic Cooking
Cooking basic stuff like maggi and toasting bread is also very much required since the craving for a mid-night snack will happen very frequently. This wikiHowshows you a really convenient way to make some tasty grilled cheese sandwich. Yumm!!

3. Hiding Ghar Se Aaya Khana
Ma ke haath ka khana is the one thing you'll start loving the most once you've started to live in a hostel. The food your mother packs for you to take back to hostel, whenever you visit home, is best hidden in common places like behind a stack of booksunder the dirty laundry, etc. Keeping it in the cupboard, even under lock and key, does NOT help.

4. Washing Utensils
Another skill which should be learnt to avoid health hazards. Improperly washed utensils can cause diseases (trust me, i have seen). Thus, please take some time out of your "busy" schedule and learn it from your parents so as to avoid inconvenience. And guess what, doing chores, which includes washing utensils, helps you lose weight!!

5.Getting Used to Birthday Parties Around You
There will be celebrations every other day in your hostel building, rest assured. If you are invited to them, they happen to be a tad bit less annoying than if you are not invited to them.

6. Dealing with the Roomies
Throughout your hostel life, you'll come across a number of roommates. Here are some of the most common types:
  1. The Dominating one: This one will try to get his/her own way when it comes to public welfare decision (e.g., when is the light to be switched off, when is it time to self study, who takes the garbage out, etc.). The best way to deal with them is to first try to adjust a bit; if that doesn't work, then ignore; and if that doesn't work, collect the others and GANG UP!!

  2. The Home-sick one: This one is whining about how "different" and "better" it is at back home every 20 minutes. These are mainly the oneswho have come from somewhere far away. These people can be temporarily dealt with by sharing your Maa ke haath ka khana. But the only long term cure is to let them get used to hostel and let them tire out from the whining. This will be him/her all the time:

  3. The Always-on-the-phone one: This one is always has a phone stuck to one of his/her ears. They are the ones who are mostly in the honeymoon phase of their relationship and always feel the need to be in touch with their significant others. If your room has a balcony, please tell them to make that their residence. If not, then the corridor can also be a viable option

  4. The Messy/Fastidious one: This one has a compulsive need to always keep their surrounding messy/clean. Just draw an imaginary line in your room dividing the spaces, and tell them to do whatever the hell they want with theirs and STAY THE HELL AWAY from yours.

7. Saving Money
One prominent characteristic of college life is the eternal state "brokedom". Now, methods to save money is different for different people, mainly because everyone has different priorities. Thus, money saving techniques are something you'll learn on the go.Still, some ways to alleviate the problem can be a) to withdraw a small amount every few days;  b) go out with a small amount with you if you know there won't be much spending required;  c) try saving up from a week before if you planning to party in the weekend.

Well, living in a P.G. accommodation for almost a year, although a little different from the hostel life, has been a very refreshing experience in my life. Along with the very much welcomed freedom, which I have taken full advantage of (wink, wink), it also inculcates a deep sense of responsibility and priority, which proves to be very helpful in many situations. So sit tight and enjoy the roller-coaster ride that is your college life!!
